Two schools of thought have developed over the years on the relationship between acne and fast food. One school takes the stances and says that acne has nothing to do with fast food. And of course the second school of thought is that fast food causes acne. One can agree with both schools of thought in a small way in that acne is not caused by fast food, but fast food can make your acne condition worse.

Below are a few reasons why fast food may cause acne or at least makes acne worse:

Foods High in Salt: in general foods high in salt are bad for your body. Why? Because salt, table salt in particular, contains iodine and when consumed in high levels iodine will induce acne in an acne prone person. Salt also causes water retention and can cause you to look puffy or feel bloated. Simply put, it’s best to stay away from excessive amounts of salt, and consuming less high salt foods will help reduce acne outbreaks and improve your skin condition.

High Oil Foods: certain oils put pressure on your heart and other organs, which can lead to less blood flow, affect the quality of your skin, and cause an increase in acne. On the other hand, olive oil has been proven to be good for the heart over the years, so some oils may be good to consume. Either way, if you eat fast foods high in oil and tend to have acne breakouts afterwards, you’ll probably want to limit these in your diet.

Foods High in Sugar: chocolate and soft drinks probably come to mind first when thinking of high sugary foods. Eating these high glycemic index (GI) foods may impact your acne. Foods that are absorbed into the bloodstream quickly are thought to have a direct impact on acne, because of the increase hormonal fluctuations they trigger. High GI foods spike hormone levels, including insulin, which is thought to instigate sebum production. Foods and drinks high in sugar should be eaten in moderation, regular consumption of these may worsen the condition of your skin.

At the end of the day, most research shows that acne is caused by a combination of the skin producing too much sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells that clog pores, all of which leads to localized infections resulting in acne. While there is no danger from acne itself, severe acne can scar as well as lead to, low self-esteem, increase anxiety and depression. Although fast food may not be a direct cause of acne, fast foods may worsen hormonal fluctuations, cause water retention, put excess pressure on organs and thereby increase your acne experience.

Your skin is the largest organ that you have. If you care about your skin, then eating a healthy, well balanced diet should be a high priority on your list. Fast foods may not cause acne, but limiting them in your diet won’t hurt either.
The post Does Fast Food Cause Acne? first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

There’s nothing trivial about acne. If you are one of the millions that suffer from acne outbreaks, you know that it can be uncomfortable and even sometimes devastating to your self-image. As you consider acne treatment options, you may want the professional help of a physician or dermatologist. These highly trained individuals can be invaluable in helping you achieve clear skin again. While they are not magicians who can make your acne disappear overnight, they can be essential in diagnosing and treating your acne condition so that you don’t have to suffer any longer.

It is important to remember a few things when visiting an acne skin care specialist. Below are some tips you should communicate to your acne specialist in order to maximize the effectiveness of your appointment.

Maximizing Your Acne Treatment Appointment

First, don’t be afraid to ask questions about your condition. Remember, we are all different, so a treatment that is highly effective for one person is not necessarily what is going to work for you. Knowledge about the particulars of your condition will help you better understand the condition you are trying to overcome. You may even want to write down any specific questions you may have to make sure you cover all the topics you want to during your appointment.

Second, the most important aspect of having an effective doctor visit is good communication. By keeping some facts or aspects about your condition from the dermatologist, you are only hurting yourself by giving them an incomplete knowledge of the facts. The doctor can only base his diagnosis on what you have told him, so try to be thorough with the details about your acne. Tell them how long your acne has been affecting you, what other treatments you’ve attempted to do before, what worsens your condition, and any other factors that you think may apply. Tell them how your acne is affecting you emotionally and socially, as mental health is synonymous with your physical health.

Third, once your doctor and you have discussed your condition, make sure that you fully understand what they will be doing in regards to your treatment. Be sure to understand the:

Correct way to apply the treatment

How long the treatment will last

And how long it will be before you begin to see results

A Successful Acne Treatment Appointment

Also, be sure and find out if there are any side effects that go along with the use of the treatment; this will help you be better prepared for any occurrences or problems that may arise. Schedule a follow-up appointment with the doctor and discuss what the status of your condition should be when you return. If you are knowledgeable about the treatment and looking for the desired results, you will know sooner whether your current method is working or not.

Remember that there are many acne treatments available that work better or worse for different people. Don’t be discouraged if the first method you try does not attain the desired results. Be patient and work with your doctor and you will soon be able to find the most effective treatment that is right for you.
The post Acne Treatment: Getting the Most from Your Doctor first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

Like so many common problems, there is no clear account of the number of people who suffer from acne. In fact, before your life ends and that of probably everyone you know, you and they will at some time suffer from a little acne outbreak.

Fortunately for most, acne is a minor problem caused by the over production of oil within the skin and the clogging of pores. The clogging is usually caused by a particular type of bacteria, which usually reacts well to treatment.

Alternative Treatments for Acne

The best advantage of alternative acne treatments is that they have limited side effects. There are several herbal combinations that have a proven track record of helping reduce acne. One such herbal combination is the paste made of basil leafs and sandalwood. Another popular alternative acne treatment is the application of the paste made of strawberry leaves. There are several other herbal combinations available on the market that effectively improves acne breakouts.

A contributing factor in the cause of acne is the deficiency of essential vitamins needed by the skin. Deficiencies in Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Pantothenic Acid can lead to acne flare-ups. Eating well-balanced portions of vegetables, fruits and vitamin supplements help treat acne issues. When it comes to naturopathy for acne, the main forms of treatments are herbs, skin cleansers and vitamin supplements. A major advantage being that these are less costly forms of alternative acne treatments.

Another recent alternative acne treatment is light. Acne laser treatment programs, which include the use of ultraviolet light, are now being used more and more to clear long term acne problems.

Unlike other types of acne treatments, some of the alternative acne treatments require a strict following of the treatment regiment. These usually are not that difficult to follow, however like anything dealing with your health, it’s wise to seek the help of a qualified professional before trying something you don’t fully understand or have concerns about.
The post Alternative Acne Treatments first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

Acne is basically a blockage in a pore, caused when bacteria becomes trapped, and forms either a whitehead or a blackhead. There are many myths that point to things like diet as a cause of acne, most are unfounded, but for some these myths are more fact than not. Fortunately for most junk foods, like burgers, fries, and chocolate are not associated with acne.

The reason we get acne is because oil glands become overactive and pores become blocked. Acne is a condition that afflicts boys, girls, women and men. Although most prevalent in our teenager years when hormones are most active, acne will rage whenever the timing is most inappropriate.

Heredity factors can also play a role in who gets acne, who doesn’t, and how severe the acne breakouts become. Those who are genetically inclined to acne will often get more severe cases than those who are simply going through their “growing-up” acne phase. Hereditary sufferers also have a more difficult time clearing up acne blemishes.

Fighting Acne

Blemishes that occur on the skin are often unsightly and embarrassing, so acne prevention and treatment should be our first line of defense and what we focus on most. Keeping your hands away and reducing the amount of face rubbing you do helps prevent acne, because it limits the amount of dirt and oils we push into and contaminate our pores with. Proper health is also very important. Diet, exercise and sleep all help to reduce stress, which can cause all types of health issues including acne.

Using a mild soap to keep your face clean is a great start at preventing acne breakouts. If you have an outbreak, home remedies, over the counter medications and prescription medications can all help. There are also several topical creams and soaps used to treat acne. Most can be found in the cosmetics department of your grocery store or pharmacy section. Benzoyl peroxide creams, vitamin A and zinc are all used to help treat acne.

For more severe cases a prescription oral antibiotic may be prescribed along with a topical cream that is stronger than the over the counter medications. Always, always, always talk to your doctor before trying prescription treatments.
The post Acne: What it Is and How to Fight It first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

A common misconception about acne is that it’s caused by dirt. Guess what? It’s not! Well, maybe not always, but dirt does have an impact on acne. Like many things, at the end of the day acne is caused by a combination of factors. Some you can control, and some you can’; like your hormone balance and the natural pace of your skin’s renewal system. Fortunately, when it comes to acne prevention, there are a number of things we can control that may help us keep our acne in check.

Here are some hygiene and medication suggestions you can follow that may help keep your skin looking healthy and free of most acne problems.

Acne Hygiene Prevention

Tip #1 – Don’t Squeeze or Pick Your Zits: Squeezing and picking your acnes — either with fingernails, pins or anything else —forces bacteria deeper into the skin, causing greater inflammation and infection. Additionally, this will increase the damage to the surrounding skin and the blemishes are more likely to leave a permanent acne scar.

Tip #2 – Hands Off! Propionibacterium acne (bacteria that causes breakouts) is a normal resident of the skin and doesn’t cause acne breakouts until it gets trapped inside the hair follicle. Excessive rubbing or touching of the skin will drive these bacteria deep into pores where it begins the process of creating an acne breakout.

Tip #3 – Don’t Over-Wash: Excessive scrubbing and washing won’t make your acne go away. When possible limit yourself to two washings per day —more than that may turn healthy skin into dry dry, and may further irritate already acne-prone areas. Additionally, over-washing can stimulate increased oil production, which may result in increased acne breakouts.

Tip #4 – Work Out, Wash Off: Exercise movements generate heat, while clothing and equipment cause friction. Heat and moisture are thereby trapped against the skin, creating an ideal breeding ground for the creation and spreading of bacteria. Showering immediately after exercising will help prevent these “overly athletic” bacteria from getting trapped in pores and reduce the chance of an acne attack.

Tip #5 – Skip Harsh Scrubs: Exfoliate is okay, as long as, you use a gentle formula with small, smooth grains. Always try to avoid products with almond or apricot shell fragments, since these can irritate or even tear the skin and further aggravate acne.

Tip #6 – Say NO To Alcohol: Should you choose to use a toner, avoid products with high concentrations of isopropyl alcohol, or common rubbing alcohol. Alcohol is a strong astringent that strips the top layer of the skin and causes the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, which results in dry, red skin and possibly more acne blemishes.

Acne Medication

Most cases of mild acne can be improved with “over-the-counter” products, or products that don’t require a prescription from a doctor. There is a wide range of treatments available, and there’s a good chance one will work for you. Starting treatment before acne gets severe may help avoid physical and emotional problems down the road, but when acne gets worse or lasts longer than a couple of weeks it’s time to see a dermatologist.

Here’s a listing of some of the most common products used to treat acne:

• Benzoyl Peroxide: kills the bacteria that cause acne.

• Proactiv® Solution: a dermatologist formulated Combination Therapy® acne management system.

• Salicylic Acid: unclogs pores and encourages skin renewal.

• Tretinoin (Retin-A®): promotes healthy sloughing.

• Antibiotics: kills bacteria and reduces inflammation.

• Oral Contraceptives: helps regulate hormone levels.

• Anti-Androgens: inhibits the body’s production of acne-causing hormones.

• Isotretinoin (Accutane®): treatment for severe cystic or nodular acne.

Alphabet Soup of Medication and Acne Side Effects

Unfortunately a number of prescription medications are known to cause acne. Consult your physician to discuss alternative treatments, if you routinely take any of the following drugs (or drugs like them) and have problems with acne breakouts. Your physician should be able to recommend something that results in fewer side affects.

Anticonvulsants (like Dilantin) are prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy and other types of seizures. Most medications in this group list acne as a common side effect.

Disulfuram (or Antabuse) is prescribed to help chronic alcoholic patients who want to remain in a state of enforced sobriety. When mixed with alcohol, this drug causes a range of unpleasant symptoms intended to discourage further mixing. Unfortunately, regular use of Disulfuram (even when not drinking) can cause acne in some patients.

Immuran. Like other immunosuppressants, Immuran is used to suppress the immune system in patients awaiting an organ transplant. It can help prevent organ rejection; it can also suppress your body’s natural ability to fight the bacteria that cause acne.

Isoniazid (or INH) is typically used to treat tuberculosis, or TB. Thought to be largely eradicated, TB experienced resurgence in the late 1980s among the homeless population and in patients suffering from AIDS. It continues to be a problem today.

Quinine is prescribed as a precaution against — or treatment for — malaria. If you’re traveling to a part of the world where malaria is a risk, be sure to ask your doctor about alternative solutions.

Thiourea and Thiouracil are thyroid preparations used to stimulate the thyroid gland in patients with low thyroid function, and are known to trigger acne breakouts. In addition, large amounts of iodine, which also helps to regulate thyroid function, can cause acne breakouts as well.

Acne No More

Regardless of age, unsightly acne breakouts are always a source of embarrassment. In most cases acne improves and goes away over time on its own with a little tender loving care. And don’t stress out about it when simple acne hygiene prevention doesn’t’ do it for you and you have to resort to acne medication.

Everyone seems to suffer a bout of the acne blues at some point in their life, including those super models you see in magazines; only they have a team of make-up artist and Photoshop experts to cover up and prevent their acne from being seen by their millions of fans.

Rarely does acne cause any life long problems and if you’re worried about your acne, then talk to your doctor sooner rather than later. Attack your acne issues now and live a healthier, happier life in your years to come.
The post Acne Prevention – Hygiene and Medication first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

The advancement of laser treatment and technology has brought acne therapy into the new century and is the suggested treatment for acne and acne scarring. In most cases acne laser treatment is not covered by insurance and the acne can come back even after treatment. Recent advances in acne laser treatment include light and laser therapy, and chemical peels.

Laser therapy is an appealing treatment for acne: no messy creams, no drugs and minimal risk of side effects. Although approved to treat acne scarring, pulsed dye laser therapy is also being used for the treatment of active inflammatory acne vulgaris.

Laser Acne Scar Treatment

With laser acne scar treatment, the focus is on developing new collagen in the lower layer of skin. When an acne patient faces pitting, or deep holes, in the skin as a result of acne, there is a treatment called laser resurfacing. This assists in better evaluation of your skin and for more effective acne laser spectrum light treatments. The CO2 laser vaporizes thin layers of the skin and tightens collagen fibers, which makes it an appropriate treatment for depressed acne scars.

Acne Blemish Laser Treatment

Most acne blemish laser treatment methods are painless and effective, but they also come at a noticeable price. A successful acne blemish laser treatment may include various types of laser exposure such as carbon dioxide lasers or non-ablative lasers. The Carbon Dioxide laser is also known to produce higher levels of pigmentation during the acne blemish laser treatment, one of the best methods for acne blemish laser treatment. Patients of acne blemish laser treatment use creams to numb the area where the laser will be applied, so the process is virtually painless.

Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment

V-Beam (Pulsed Dye Laser) is commonly used for the treatment of red acne scars, stretch marks and keloids, which are thickened scar tissue. Here you will find information about acne laser scar treatment. The Er:YAG laser should be reserved for sculpting of individual scar edges and treatment of mild acne scars. Scar Treatment, another option for the use of acne laser treatment, is that in which the acne scars can be removed.
The post Acne Laser Treatment Program first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

Acne is a skin ailment that affects millions of people and that includes just about everyone at some point in their life. Almost ninety percent of the world’s total population is affected by acne, with an even higher percentage of teenagers being affected. Like most skin disorders, acne varies from rather mild to extremely severe cases. Typically characterized by incidences of pimples and blackheads on the face, neck, chest, and back, acne sometimes forms deep under the skin creating an acne cyst.

What Causes Acne Cyst

Acne cysts are the result of bacterial infections deep within the skin. In contrast to blackheads and whiteheads that are typically surface level blemishes, acne cyst are generally huge inflamed lesions that are filled with pus. Caused by a clogged pore, oils produced by the skin seep into the skin and when combined with bacteria a major localized immune response is produced. The clogged pore acts like a dam. As the skin continues producing oil and backs up the cyst continues to grow in size.

Since acne cyst form within pores they can grow any place on the body and often look like a nodule. Typically having a diameter of 5mm or more across, acne cyst will continue to grow if left untreated. Although acne cysts are usually just “ugly bumps” they can become rather painful as they increase in size.

Acne Cyst Treatment and Prevention

Acne cyst can be treated and prevented. Conceivably the best way to treat and prevent ace cyst from forming in the first place is to not squeeze, pick or pinch the early lesions as this may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation. In the earliest stages acne cyst can be treated with oral and topical antibiotics. In the case of modest to severe acne cyst, the most common therapy usually ends up being surgery.

Often done as outpatient surgery, the typical acne cyst can be removed in as little as 15 – 20 minutes. After numbing the area with a local anesthesia, followed by a quick incision, some squeezing, pulling, a few stiches and it’s over. However, to be successful the surgeon must remove the “entire acne sac” that formed under the skin. Two weeks later the stiches will be removed and usually within a month everything is pretty well healed and unnoticeable. By the way, don’t worry about a possible bald spot if your cyst is located on your “noggin” because a good surgeon will remove the acne cyst without having to shave any of your hair!

Revenge of the Acne Cyst

Unfortunately, even when surgery is required and the entire acne sac is removed, there is no 100% method that will absolutely prevent an acne cyst from returning. Just like all other cases of acne, acne cyst form in the pores of the body and the body is just loaded with pores.

Acne cyst have no limits and will seek revenge on any willing and able body, so make sure to always follow a good skin care cleaning regiment and eat healthy too. Both of these activities will help keep acne at bay and should you find yourself suffering from an acne cyst, make sure you seek out a qualified medical professional for guidance soon than later.
The post Acne Cyst first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

Getting Rid of Acne

I’m sure you have had one or two sleepless nights and found yourself watching some late night and early morning infomercials were Jessica Simpson and Sean “Diddy” Combs talk about getting rid of acne. Apparently if someone famous like a celebrity trusts a product, then you and everyone else should too. The promises made by some of these infomercial products sound so surreal. For some it’s just the cure they’re looking for, but like many these products are not for everybody.

Acne Breakouts

My dermatologist prescribed a cream and some oral medication. Following the instructions for both items very closely helped clear my acne breakouts within a couple of weeks. Although it was the right solution in my case, it may not be the right solution for you. As we all know, acne is a widespread problem that many teenagers face. It’s such an extremely embarrassing period of our lives, so here are 5 tips for getting rid of acne that may help you.

Oily Skin – a medicated acne product or one in gel form is best for this skin type

Dry Skin – an acne cream form and medicated products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salycic acid are best when it comes to this type of skin

Combination (Oily and Dry) Skin – for combination skin look for gels and acne creams to apply to different areas of your body according to the skin condition there

Sensitive Skin – you will less intense concentrations of either dry, oily, or combined-type treatments

Acne Induced Skin Pain – definitely seek the help of a dermatologist if you suffer from this condition

Embarrassing Acne No More

Many people struggle with acne breakouts on a regular basis. Considering that science has advanced to the point where we can put a man on the moon, you would think we could find a solution for all of our acne problems. However, Mother Nature is a tough nut to crack and acne breakouts continue to destroy the confidence of many teenagers and adults too.

Regardless of your age those unsightly acne breakouts will, in most cases, go away in time and with a little tender loving care. Don’t stress too much and if life with embarrassing acne gets you down, then seek out a dermatologist or try one of our 5 tips for getting rid of acne that matches your skin type and start using it today!
The post 5 Tips For Getting Rid of Acne first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

Given that acne is one of the most common diseases in the world, were constantly surprised at the amount of misinformation floating around out there about “miracle” acne treatments. There are so many commonly misheld beliefs regarding acne treatments that have absolutely no scientific or medical validity, but continue to be passed on from individual to individual.

Non-working Acne Treatments

1. Household cleaning products, even when diluted, should not be used to treat acne. There can be severe adverse reactions and consequences, including chemical burns or worse, when following these suggested treatments.

2. Similarly, standard home cleaning powders are just ineffective as an acne treatment.

3. Standard dish washing liquids do not work and shouldn’t be used and to treat acne.

4. Home facial saunas do little to nothing for your acne and may even aggravate already sensitive skin.

5. Sticky tape left on the skin overnight and removed in the morning will certainly remove dead skin cells and excess oil, but is more likely to damage sensitive skin and may even cause additional aggravation or allergies, due to the glues used in the tape.

6. Prolonged exposure to the sun or using a sun bed will not help your acne, and can be dangerous if you are also taking certain types of oral medication. For example taking certain antibiotics in tablet form will make your skin highly sensitive to sunlight, which is not healthy for acne prone skin.

7. Sudocrem is an excellent treatment for nappy rash and may have some effective on acne. However, monitor use carefully as it tends to dry out skin and leave it flaky.

8. Taking high doses of vitamin A or B will not directly help your acne, and may cause other side effects.

9. Squeezing zits, white and black heads, or other spots is universally not recommended in combating acne. Doing so typically prolongs and spreads the acne causing bacteria to other parts of the immediate area, thereby increasing the possibility of further problems rather than eliminating the current one.

Acne Treatment Is A Process

There are many other acne treatment regimes that are ‘not recommended’, many of which will just worsen an already problematic condition. When it comes to acne you should really try to avoid shortcuts and stick with well-defined cleansing program, overseen by your medical professional if your condition is severe.

Trying to take a shortcut to clear skin with unproven acne treatments tends to worsen the problem. However, time and patients usually result in the ability to overcome those pesky acne conditions you find so embarrassing.
The post 9 Acne Treatments That Definitely Do Not Work first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

The post Baby Acne: A Brief Overview first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.

As if new moms don’t have enough to worry about, imagine the shock of waking up to find their newborn precious with a pimple. New moms shouldn’t worry if their baby has pimples. About 20% of all newborn babies are affected by baby acne, also known as acne-neonatorum.

An Overview of Baby Acne

Newborn babies often develop acne because of the lingering maternal hormones after delivery, which may cause stimulation to the baby’s sebaceous glands. Your baby receives these hormones from the placenta, after the delivery. There are various aspects related to baby acne that are different from acne that affects other age groups.

Infantile acne is gender-biased. Male babies are more affected than their female counterparts. Normally babies begin showing signs of acne attacks around the age of three (3) weeks old. Some babies have it from the time of delivery. Generally the types of acne you find in infants are papules and pustules. Papules are red bumps and pustules are whiteheads. Often there is a collection of pus when baby acne is present.

Some babies also have acne on the scalp. The lesions will take care of themselves within a period of few months. Take care of the baby’s acne areas as you would take care of its other body parts.

Treating Baby Acne

First things first, the treatment for baby acne is not the same as acne treatment for any other age group. Acne in babies usually does not require extensive treatment. Use mild baby soap and gently clean the face once a day with water. Do not try harsher methods, like using oils and other lotions, which you think are good for adults. They may at times, worsen the condition. Know for certain that infantile acne will typically disappear when it ready to.

If your family pediatrician feels that your baby has severe acne, consider treating it with benzoyl peroxide, keratolytic agents or topical creams like retinoids. Make sure you don’t start these treatments on your own, only start these after being instructed to by a qualified medical practitioner.

Baby Acne Anxiety

In your anxiety to photograph your baby, don’t plaster his or her cheeks with cosmetics. Consider the Photoshop method of correcting baby acne before trying to fix it with chemicals. Or even work with your baby to strike an imaginative pose to hide those little blemishes.

The ways of baby acne are indeed mysterious. If you have a history of acne in your family, that doesn’t mean that your baby will have acne. And just because your baby has acne, it doesn’t mean they will suffer from acne attacks, as they grow older. Acne has its own way of working itself out.

New moms, and dads, need to remember they weren’t the cause of junior’s baby acne. Just sit back and enjoy the arrival of your little precious and get as much sleep as you can.
The post Baby Acne: A Brief Overview first appeared on At Home Acne Remedy.
